The Importance of Communications

Communications is the glue that holds organizations together. Communications assists organizational members to accomplish both individual and organizational change, coordinate organizational activities, and engage in virtually all organizational relevant matters. Yet, as important as this process is, breakdowns in communications are pervasive.

It would be extremely difficult to find an aspect of a manager’s job that does not involve communications. Serious problems arise when directives are misunderstood, when casual kidding in a work group leads to anger, or when informal remarks by top-level managers are distorted. Each of these situations is a result of a breakdown somewhere in the process of communications.

Accordingly, the pertinent question is not whether managers engage in communications because communications is inherent to the functions of an organization but are managers communicating well or poorly. In other words, communications itself is unavoidable in an organization’s functioning; only ineffective communications is avoidable.

Every manager must be an effective communicator!
